Pope Julius II was the pope from 1503 to 1513, during the period known as the Renaissance. He was born Giuliano della Rovere in Savona, Italy, in 1443. As pope, he was known for his military campaigns and his patronage of the arts. He was responsible for the construction of the Sistine Chapel and commissioned Michelangelo to paint the ceiling. He was also a strong patron of Bramante, who designed St. Peter's Basilica. Pope Julius II was also known as the "Warrior Pope" due to his military campaigns, most notably against the Republic of Venice. He died in 1513 at the age of 69.
